THE SAFE STATE

When a safety analysis begins, the safety engineer must know the safe state or failure behaviors that are acceptable or desired. The safe state must be complimentary to the functional criticality. If it’s a new project, it is more convenient and easier to define concise desired “safe states” or failure behaviors. In older project pedigrees, when understanding and defining the safe state was not previously clearly defined, it may be a bit of a challenge to clearly understand the intent of the designers, or there may be multiple “safe states” employed.
